Prediction - Due Feb 25

At the indicated point (right after Christine throws the letters away during the summer), stop reading and write a paragraph predicting what you think will happen later in the story (no peeking!) Use at least two cited details from the text to support your prediction AND use two vocabulary words from any units (1-5). Due Feb 25

  1. I think that the ALIEN man is going to come back to Christine. From the way he wrote the letters that he sent her, he obviously cares about her. He always told her "I am fine" and "I hope you are well." He cared about whether she was well or not. He also called himself her friend multiple times.

I also think that the man is the "Man from Mars" in the title. The man didn't speak English very well and his handwriting was that of a CALLOW child who had just learned how to write. He wrote in block letters. He was also the only suspicious male charater in the story.

  2. One prediction for what will happen is that the OCCULT man will be waiting for Christine and keep following her when she comes back home. The reason is that even though Christine was gone the occult man would send her lots of letters. Another prediction is that the occult man might want to go out with Christine. The INNUENDO that gave me this prediction is that the occult man took a photo of her and him and said he would send it to his family and they will like it.

  3. I believe that after Christine throws the letters away, her "friend" will come back. The ALIEN man is very strange and does not act like normal humans. He tracked her phone number down and followed her life like he was stalking her (Atwood 714). Because he is stalking her, he knows she threw the letters away. He will come back because in the letters he showed that he cared for her, and he is offended that she threw the letters away. To him, the situation is very CUMBERSOME.

I also believe that Christine will be very afraid and confused when her friend comes back to visit. It will frighten her because he was able to find where she was and because he knew she threw away the letters. At the beginning, Christine tolerated his awkwardness, but became uncomfortable with the situation when he wanted to follow her home (Atwood 713). Christine will feel like the man is stalking her and will wonder what the man really is.

  4. I predict that the foriegn man will be at Christine's house waiting for her when she arrives home from camp. I think he will try to talk to her and question her about why she stopped replying to the many letters he sent to her (Atwood 718). I think this because he seems like he likes her and cares for her. This would make him want to question her and make sure she was okay. Also I predict that her mother will be mad and upset when she hears about her daughter's SLAPDASH behavior. Christine's mother will REPRIMAND her for being rude to her new friend. I believe this because earlier in the story Christine's mom wanted to be nice to the foriegn man and have him over for tea (Atwood 715). Her mother will feel that Christine should be nice to him because he is new and doesn't seem to know many other people.

  5. My first prediction is that the ALIEN man will continue to send Christine letters. This is because in the text it says that he sends letters every week while Christine is at camp. The story says, “Each week she got another of these letters, more or less identical,” (Atwood 718). My second prediction is that the foreign man is going to come back to where Christine lives. I think this because he seems to like where it is but the main reason is that he seems to like Christine a lot. When he came for tea and he took a picture of himself with Christine it seemed like he likes to be with her (Atwood 717). Plus he always nagged her by calling her and sending her letters (Atwood 714). The author gives an INNUENDO that he’s going to come back by him still keeping in touch with Christine. He keeps in touch with Christine by sending letters (Atwood 718).

  6. I think that the ALIEN man will come back to where Christine lives. He seems very drawn to her, and obviously wants to be friends with her. You can tell he likes her because he says "you are my friend" (Atwood 712). I think the time apart from the man will FORTIFY Christine's feelings towards him and she will start to really like him too and they will become good friends. I think this because she's resistant towards him at first, but when she's getting the letters she writes back to him and keeps all the letters until the end of the summer (Atwood 718).

  7. I think that Christine will stop sending letters back to the ALIEN man who is writing to her. (Atwood 718)Once Christine stops sending letters to the man I think he will become worried for her because when he asks if shes doing well in his letters he will get no reply. I also predict that her friend will come and surprise Christine. I believe this will happen because the Oriental man is not MOROSE at all and that he will become worried when Christine does not reply. Evidence from the story that supports this claim is that the man is constantly asking Christine if she is fine, this shows that the man cares for Christines well being.

  8. I predict that the strange man will come back to visit Christine once she returns from camp. This is predictable because throughout the beginning of the story the man has a PERENNIAL behavior and doesn't comprehend the word "no". He demonstrates this behavior when Christine first meets him, insisting on carrying her things and going home with her even after she plainly turned him down (Atwood712), and also shortly after when he tracks down her phone number (Atwood713).

I also predict that the strange man will fall in love with Christine. I predict that this will happen because from the moment he met her, he didn't act like a friend. When he asked for her name, hunted her number down, and then invited himself to tea, it seemed like he was making a move (Atwood715). Also, when he was taking a picture at tea and then posed with his cheek against hers and his hand in her lap, it suggested that he wanted to SIMULATE that they were dating(Atwood717).

  9. Because the short story is called The Man from Mars, I believe that the small man is an ALIEN. Not from outer space, but from a place very far away and very different from Canada, where the story takes place. The little man is obviously attracted to Christine and he shows it when he puts his arm around her waist when he takes their picture in paragraph 93 of the story(Atwood 717). As the story continues I think that the little man will keep following Christine and while following her, his attempts to get her attention will become more desperate. I think that this will occur because she didn’t write back to him over the summer and she threw away his letters. Christine’s actions will make the small man even more desperate for his attention because even when she was TERSE with him in paragraph 36 he still called her and continues to follow her(Atwood 713).

  10. In The Man from Mars, there are many predictions that I can created through the text. One prediction that I made was that the ALIEN man left because he assumed that Christine would never love him. The man might feel something he has never felt before when he is around Christine. This frightened him, so he left to tell his family about he new founded love.

Another prediction of mine is that Christine threw away the letters from a certain purpose. (Atwood 718) That purpose was that when the man sent her the picture of both of them, she then felt that feeling that she might wanted to leave behind. I believe that Christine saw more in the man then just strange. (Atwood 717) She viewed him CHERUBIC and kind in his own special way. Because of this, she too feel in love with the strange man, but had a crazy way of portraying it.

  11. I predict that Christine will return home and find more letters like the ones she received in the summer(Atwood 718). Eventually I think the man will reveal what he really wants from Christine and express his UNFLINCHING love for her. I predict Christine will reject him harshly and he will return to his home country because he is so upset.

My second prediction is that the ALIEN man continues to follow Christine after his numerous appearances at her house(Atwood 715). Christine finally gets bothered by his actions and gets the man in trouble. The man is then forced to return to his home country.

  12. Christine tore up the letters because she wanted to forget, or ignore the akward relationship she had with this ALIENISTIC "man". I believe that this man who sent the letters is going to return to Christine later in the story due to the fact that he would not leave her alone after they met in the park. Statements said by the man such as "I go with you now,"(Atwood712) and "You are my friend"(Atwood712) indicate that, for whatever reason, he was trying to force a relationship with her. Because he was so UNFLINCHING with her, he is likely to come back later in the story.

Another prediction that could be used as a suitable conclusion would be the fact that the man is not from Earth, hinted by the title "Man from Mars". He even stated himself "My country is very far,"(Atwood712). This gives me reason to believe that he not only came from another country, but possibly another planet. This might frighten Christine and leave her speachless, not knowing what to do or who to tell.

  13. I predict that the ALIEN man will go to the camp to see her. But, I think that he will not get there until she leaves. When he goes snooping around the camp to find out where she went I think he will see the letters in the trash can. Although he will be upset, I think that he will still go back to see her at her house. He will go back because he really likes her and she wrote back to her first letter (Atwood 714). He doesn’t seem to understand her culture very well, so he might take it the wrong way and think she likes him back.

I also predict that the young man will ask her to go with him to his home. He really seems to like her and seems like he won’t take no as an answer. This is demonstrated when the man takes her racquet and she tells him she can carry it but he tells her no he will. When she finally DISENTANGLES the racquet from his hands she leaves but he follows her. He was stalking her and kept calling her and sending her notes so he will want her to go with him.

  14. I predict that the ALIEN man will keep writing to her after the summer and since she will throw them out(Atwood718) he will come back to visit her. He will do this in an act of love since he says "how are you" and "I hope you are fine" in his letters although she EXHORTS him to leave her alone. I think that he will come back and she will accept him and they will develop a excellent relationship.

I predict that mabey when Christine gets back from camp she will be mailed more letters from the strange man and prehaps be visited by him again. The man ask about the letters he wrote and be even more presistent in trying to see her. I belive Christine will get vexed and very IRATE by the man if this happens and will try to ignore him. This might make him mad and he might try to abduct her because he dosent Christine's culture very well.

I also predict that the man will come back to see Christine after camp and mabey try to stay with her and live in her house. I think this because in the story he says "'I like to stay here.'" (Atwood 717) Christine would not like and refuse to let him stay but her mother might let him stay for awhile because he is still new to the country and she seems nice. this could cause a BREACH in Christine and her mom's relationship.

  16. I predict that the OCCULT man will continue to follow Christine. I believe this will happen because the man was contnuously trying to be in contact with her. An example would be when Christine went to camp, he tried to stay in contact with her by sending her letters (Atwood 718). Also the man called Christine even though she did not give him her phone number (Atwood 174-715). My second prediction is that the ADHERENT man will eventually anger Christine. I believe that this will happen because of his many actions that have upset Christine in the past. For example Christine did not like it when the man grabbed her arm when she was truing to get away from him (Atwood 712-713). Another examplle is when Christine was upset that the man tried to take her racket from her(Atwood 713). Who knows what will happen next?

  17. I believe the OCCULT man will keep sending Christine letters telling her how much he cares for her. He shows he cares for her in his letters because they are always saying, "I hope you are well."

I also believe the occult man will come back to Christine and be ADHERENT to her. I think he will begin to stalk her. The man shows he wants to be with Christine by helping her on page 712, "She bent for her tennis racquet but he had already stooped and retrieved it and was holding it with both hands in front of him, like a captured banner." I think he will stalk her by the way he touches her,"As she bent over to pick up her tennis racquet again someone touched her on her freshly bared arm." Also, "'I go with you now,' he said. His hand clamped on her arm above the elbow." I think he will bother Christine to the point where she becomes very annoyed and IRATE with him.

  18. I think that the man will continue trying to contact her. I think that eventually he will try contacting her all the time. I think this because he keeps writing to her even though she doesn't write back. He seems very attached to her, and this attempt at talking to her all the time will make Chistine IRATE.

I also think that he may have some sort of disease. He is quite short and looks a bit off. Sometimes these sort of signs may suggest that internally a person’s body isn’t functioning the way it should be. He may be dying of some disease and just want to make a friend. Maybe this is the only way he knows how, or just doesn’t have much experience in making friends. He could just want to make a friend before this disease I think he has ANNIHILATES him.

  19. I predict that the ALIEN man that Christine met will continue to send her letters and follow her around. As it is shown when he practically invites himself for tea(Atwood 715) this shows that he has stalker tendencies because he tracked Christine down and found her number. I also think that he will try to pursue a romantic relationship with Christine because he sent he letters and would always ask her "I hope you are well" in his letters(Atwood 718) so this shows that he apparently cares for her even though he makes her very IRATE.

  20. I predict that when Christine arrives from camp, she'll continue to acquire letters from the mysterious man. This ALIEN man kept sending letters to Christine while she was away at camp (Atwood718). The mysterious stranger will not stop sending Christine letters because he is foreign and does not understand that Christine doesn't like it.

Another prediction is that the foreign man will eventually become a stalker of Christine. He will follow Christine everywhere she goes. This will cause Christine to become very IRATE and cause her to scream at him. Being from a different culture the man will not know how to react. Heart broken, I believe he will return to his home.

  21. My first prediction is that the ALIEN man "from Mars" will continue to send letters to Christine and she will ignore them. One day he will come to her house and ask why she hasn't been returning his letters. This will completly freak out Christine so she will then report him to the police out of fear of being hurt by him.

My second prediction is that the letters will suddenly cut off and Christine will wonder where the man went. Then many years later when she is out of school and living on her own, she will get a letter in the mail that says that he was sorry he didn't write. He was "traveling" (to Mars) and was having a bad connection. This will become a very PARAMOUNT part of her life.

  22. After reading the first part of the short story, I can make many guesses and predictions to what will happen next. One thing that I think will happen is that, no matter how hard she tries to stay away from the alien man, or how hard she reviles him, he will keep following here. He will not stop sending her letters while she is at camp no matter how much she wants him to stop (Atwood 118). Another reason I predict he will never stop so easily is by how he feels as though they have known each other for years and doesn’t keep a wall between them. When he wants to take her picture, he tries to get too close to her (Atwood 117). Someone who lives around the area would never take a picture with someone they didn’t know very well.

  24. In the story The Man from Mars I predicted that after Christine threw away the letters the man will become IRATE that shes not responding. So he'll stop sending her the letters. Chrisitine will begin to feell DRIVEL and sorry like she had bofer (Atwood 717). Next she will have to INTEREEDE to talk to him again.

I also predict that after Christine throws away the letters he will become upset from her not responding because he cares for her (Atwood 718). He will keep tryng to get her to respond by sending her more letters. Christine will continue to not respond. Causing him to find her. Which will make her upset at herself too because she could've just responded to the letters.

  25. My personal prediction after reading the first part of the story is that the ALIENATED man will send back the picture he took with Christine's mother and attatch a strange note onto the photo that will be like a riddle that Christine will be EXHORTED to solve. The riddle will have to do with the man's family to whom is unknown to Christine (Atwood 717). The longer it takes for Christine to solve this riddle, the more letters the man will send her and won't stop (Atwood 718). Once she solves the mystery, she will learn a very valuable lesson that she will never forget.

  26. I believe that one of two things will happen in the second half of this story. Either the little oriental man will be CATALYST in Christine's life and she will become a better person, or I predict that Christine and the man will end up falling for each other and end up together at the end of the story. The way the man acted at the tea party and the way he was very outgoing by constantly calling Christine and trying to socialize with her is very against what she is comfortable with. However, she finds the way he behaves very intriguing and has a weird feeling for him at the tea party that she wants to suppress. This would lead me to believe that she will find something very special about his ways that make her a better person and will in turn become more like the man- evidence for first prediction.
When Christine said that she had these feelings for the man at the tea party that she would rather close herself off to as he was taking her picture it led me to believe that these feelings would manifest themselves in her. The man had already had some feelings for Christine and was obviously trying to get to her by stalking and calling her and also by making some moves on her at the tea party. Although Christine tried to REPRIMAND the man at first, it appears to me that she saw something in him at the tea party and will eventually end up loving him- evidence for second prediction.

  27. Toward the end of the story, I predict that the ALIEN man will return to the town where Christine lives and meet her again. I think this because the letters that he wrote seemed not so PARAMOUNT, however, I think they show that he misses her and wants to return (Atwood 718). In addition, I believe that when the man returns, he will reveal a strange and unexpected secret. It will shock Christine and possibly even frighten or put her in danger. The main event that causes me to predict this is when the man takes a picture when Christine invited him over for tea. His strange actions showed that there was more to his image than what appeared (Atwood 717).

    ReplyDelete
  28. Further in the story I believe that Christine will grow even more IRATE than she already is. "she threw all the letters away." She is probably annoyed by the man already. Eventually the man's strange SEMBLANCE, "He was also what was referred to in their family as 'a person of another culture,'" will lead to an awkward break up which will consequently lead to the sadness of the man.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think that the man's EXODUS will not be for very long. From the moment they met, the foreign man started becoming more and more attached to Christine, and there isn't much evidence given that this won't continue. I think he may return to Christine's house or at least continue to send her letters and pictures, like he had already been doing. His interest in Christine will probably EXPEDITE, on the verge of stalking. Eventually, Christine will do something to make him go away, since she already felt uncomfortable about him being near her so often.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think that the ALIEN man will continue to follow and try to contact Christine everywhere she goes. I believe this because in the text it is easy to see that the man likes to be around Christine. Although, if he finds out that swhe threw the letters that he wrote her away he could get very upset and stop trying to be around her. If this were to happen then the situation might flip flop. This would be a case where Christine started to like the man more than he liked her. This could happen because Christine is obviously not a very COMELY girl. The man flattered her when he took their picture in the garden and he could probobly do it again. Also, because Christine was not use to the attention that the man was giving her should probobly begin to like it and long for it all the time.

  31. I think the ALIEN man is FATED come back after she comes back from summer camp. He seemed to like her a lot for not knowing her very well. He sent her letters and he thoguht about her even when he was in a different country. I also think that he will try to come into her house agian. Last time he invited himself over and he seemed to like being inside her house, even taking a picture of them together.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Christine will continue to *abominate* the man. For a while, she will ignore and dislike the man. (She is already doing this in the story, and shows no sign of change) Something will happen later in the story, and Christine will be in trouble. The man will do something to help, and Christine will *expiate* the man. I say this because the man seems to care about Christine, following her home. If he follows her enough, something bad might happen while he is around.
